Suriname’s Oliver Tjin Liep Shie produced such an impressive performance that it must be causing headaches among local Group 3 drivers.
The consistent Dutch racer, who is no stranger to the South Dakota Circuit, having raced here for a number of years showed why he is so respected among his peers in regional motor racing.

Suriname’s Oliver Tjin Liep Shie (inset) hoists the chequered flag after one of his victories on Sunday.
His showdown with Trinidadian Ravi Singh and the usually flawless Danny Persaud was as enthralling as it gets with the Surinamese racing to the lead from the start and displaying his defensive ability to protect his lead to the finish.
It was so exciting to watch the duel between him and Persaud, whose Mazda Miata many felt was the faster of the two cars, but Tjin Liep Shie drove a masterclass race to force a mistake from the local speedster as he attempted to pass him along the straightaway heading for the clubhouse corner.
Liep Shie, who drives a Toyota Starlet, was impeccable throughout the day, hugging the turns with great skill, while exhibiting tremendous calm when placed under pressure from Persaud and Singh.
Liep Shie has always been a formidable opponent, especially when he campaigned in the Group 2 class against the likes of Shairaz Roshandin and Chet Singh, but his elevation to the Group 3 division has seen him take his talent up a notch and judging from his exploits last Sunday, he is justifiably the man to beat now.
While reigning Caribbean Group 4 champion Kristian Jeffrey and young Matthew Vieira also registered rivetting performances, Liep Shie’s display must highlight any discussion about the day’s outstanding performances.
In all three races he had to repel attack after attack, but every time he was equal to the task and won the opportunity to hold the chequered flag on all three occasions.
His consistent presence at racing in Guyana surely by now must have increased his popularity among fans and come November when the final leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship is held here, old admirers and new converts will have another opportunity to see one of the rising stars in regional racing.
Be sure not to miss that chance.
