NBS renews GCA 2nd division sponsorship for 4th year
‘Sponsorship has provided opportunities for GT players’ says Roger Harper

President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) former Guyana and West Indies off-spinning all-rounder Roger Harper told the gathering of New Building Society executives, GCA officials, players and the Media at yesterday’s launching of the fourth annual NBS 40-over second division cricket competition, that the sponsorship has provided opportunities for players in Georgetown to showcase and hone their talent.
Harper added that these opportunities have led to a number of players going on to greater heights in the cricketing realm.
This year saw twelve young cricketers who would have played in this competition for the last three years and benefitted from NBS’s sponsorship, which provided them the opportunity to display and refine their game to go on the represent Guyana at the youth level
Ashmead Nedd, Alphius Bookie, Sachin Singh, Qumar Turrington and Robin Williams (U-15), Nedd, Timothy McLmont, Raymond Perez, Sagar Heteramani (U-17), Sherfane Rutherford, Tavin Imlach, Travis Persaud and Renaldo Renee (U-19) are the 12 players.
Harper thanked NBS for their continued sponsorship and wished them well in the future. He said that the launching of this competition is timely as the weather appears to have finally improved and clubs are in the process of getting their grounds in shape to be ready for the start of the season.
Two new teams have joined the other 14 in Sophia and Saints Stanislaus College, the only school team in the competition which is scheduled to commence on August 22 and will be played in two zones with the top two teams from each zone advancing to the semi-finals.
The other teams set to participate are GCC, Everest, Transport, Third Class, GNIC, Police, DCC, UG, Ace Warriors, GDF, Malteenoes, GYO, MYO and Diplomats.
Vice-Chairman of NBS Seepaul Narine said, the entity through this sponsorship for the fourth consecutive year, is an expression of its confidence in the people at the helm of the GCA.
“We at NBS strongly believe that this sponsorship will contribute towards the upliftment of cricket in Georgetown and by extension, nationally and regionally, which is very much needed when one considers the current state of West Indies cricket. Hopefully, a cricketing star another Kanhai, Lloyd, Chanderpaul, Gibbs or Harper can emerge from this competition. This second competition provides an excellent opportunity for players with concealed talent to make a name for themselves,” Narine disclosed.
The NBS Director congratulated the four Guyanese who were selected for the West Indies U-19 World Cup camp, especially Tavin Imlach, who played in the NBS 40-Over 2nd division competition.
“We would like to wish the GCA every success in the running of the tournament and give our recognition of NBS corporate social responsibilities of the allocation eight million dollars annually for donation to charity and educational purposes inclusive of sports. This is our way of giving back to the community,” Narine said.
GCC has won the NBS 40-Over 2nd division every year since it began and last year they defeated Transport Sports Club by 159 runs in the final.
