Jailed: Dominic Morris
In doing so, he ridiculed a policeman, claiming that the officer was the one who snatched the phone from the woman’s pocket. Morris, of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, also claimed that the officer ran behind him and placed the phone inside his pocket.
However, at the conclusion of his trial yesterday he was found guilty of the offence by Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty.
Morris appeared shocked when the magistrate informed the court that he was sentenced to two years imprisonment.
On April 16, at Regent Street, he stole one Samsung Galaxy S4 cell phone valued $100,000 and a gold chain from Melanie Deen. Police Corporal, Sean Blackman presented the prosecution’s case.
According to court facts, Deen was walking near the East Coast car park in the company of another. He said that the victim was using her cell phone when the defendant approached her and snatched the device.
After doing so, the accused ran up the road. An alarm was raised by the young woman and public-spirited citizens apprehended Morris. The cell phone was found in his pocket.
Deen had told the court that she was talking to her mother on the phone when Morris approached her and snatched it. She added that the man ran away and she followed behind him hollering, “thief thief”.
She stated that after persons heard her, they ran behind the man “ and caught him, with the phone in his right pants pocket”.
