Multi-million-dollar robbery accused, Kurt Kendall made another court appearance on Wednesday before Magistrate Judy Latchman and was further remanded to prison on armed robbery charges.
Kendall, of Section ‘B’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, was once again unrepresented by an attorney. He made a bail application on his own, reminding the court of his alibi. He pleaded with the Magistrate to grant him bail in a reasonable sum.
Kendall told the court that on the day of the robbery, he was at a car rental service, renting a car. He added that he was incarcerated since June 8, and it was his fifth court appearance.
The defendant continued, “Since my incarceration my wife is unemployed and it is very difficult for her to maintain herself and my son”.
Further, he explained that he has never seen the victims make a court appearance. Kendall said that he is not a flight risk and will return to court to answer the charges if granted bail.
Kendall is accused of robbing Elizabeth Seepaul of $1.2M and $2.5M on May 29 at Thomas Lands, Georgetown. He was allegedly armed with a gun at the time of the robbery. The monies are the property of Wings Aviation and Fly Jamaica, respectively.
It is also alleged that on the day in question, he robbed Christopher Ali at gunpoint and relived him of $1, 652,000 – property of Fly Jamaica.
The Magistrate after listening to Kendall’s submission inquired from Police Prosecutor, Inspector Vishnu Hunt, if he had any objections to the defendant being granted pre-trial liberty. Hunt replied in the affirmative.
On his last court appearance, the prosecutor had objected to bail citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. It was also noted that a firearm was used to allegedly commit the crime. The fact that the defendant was convicted before for robbery under-arms was also highlighted by the prosecutor. Kendall spent three years in jail on that conviction.
After being informed by the Magistrate that he was still on remand, Kendall made a request to have legible copies of a statement he was given. It was then that the Magistrate instructed the prosecutor to serve him with a better copy.
According to court facts, the victims are employed at Fly Jamaica and are stationed at the Ogle International Airport. On the day in question, around 10:30hrs, they boarded the company’s bus and went to conduct business.
While the bus was in the vicinity of Queen’s College, a motor car pulled up in front of the said bus, causing the driver (of the bus) to stop. Three men exited the car, the defendant pulled out a gun and relieved Seepaul and Ali of the cash.
Kendall will make his next court appearance on August 18.
