Four now on custody for East Canje chopping incident
The police have now held a fourth man as investigations continue in the brutal chopping of cane cutter Michael Dorway, 32, of Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje Berbice.
Dorway and another friend were imbibing alcohol at a rum shop at the nearby Canefield Village when he requested a change in the type of music. Some others who were in the shop were not pleased with his request and this led to an altercation.
Dorway and his friend subsequently left the premises and were hunted down by the others.
The other group subsequently ambushed and chased Dorway, caught and severely chopped him about his body. It was understood that a lance was also used to inflict injuries on the man.
However Kaieteur News also understands that the feud stemmed from an old grievance between the victim and the perpetrators some time ago.
The man’s wife, Kimmy, had told Kaieteur News that she was at home when she received a call and was told that her husband wanted to see her immediately, that he was at the hospital.
She said that when she arrived at the New Amsterdam Hospital, her husband was in a terrible state, with chops all over his body, including his head, foot and hand. The wounds to his hand and foot are more severe than the others.
When she arrived at the hospital he was being prepared to be transferred to the Georgetown Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he underwent emergency treatment. He is still hospitalized in a critical condition.
The woman had also stated that whilst her husband was on the road, three pickup trucks filled with men and women armed with cutlasses pulled up alongside him and the attack began.
Three persons were initially arrested, and after further investigation a fourth was taken into custody. Charges are likely soon.
