The Ministry of Public Infrastructure is working to achieve a Category One rating under the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) Programme by 2016.
For Guyana, this would mean that Guyanese operators would be able to fly direct to the US, among other benefits, a statement from the Ministry explained yesterday.
It was explained that Category One means that air carriers from the assessed country (in this case Guyana) may initiate or continue service to the United States in a normal manner and take part in reciprocal code-share arrangements with U.S. carriers.
Currently, Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson who has responsibility for aviation in Guyana, is currently heading a delegation at the 15th Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System (CASSOS) Board of Directors meeting in Bridgetown, Barbados.
The meeting commenced yesterday and will conclude tomorrow.
Minister Ferguson is accompanied by Guyana Civil Aviation Authority’s (GCAA) Director General (Ag), Chaitrani Heeralal and its General Counsel, Amanza Walton-Desir.
The implications of Guyana’s compliance to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Regulations and the provision of technical assistance to enhance aviation practices, safety and security, are among the issues on the meeting’s agenda, the Ministry said.
