At a recent constitutional meeting held by the Georgetown Mayor and Councillors,
members expressed their concern at the number of abandoned buildings in the city and the neglected vehicles that cause inconvenience on the city streets.
Mayor Hamilton Green said that abandoned vehicles on council parapets and reserves are an eyesore and an environmental hazard. Therefore, Council will have to take the necessary steps to secure the integrity of the city.
“Council is calling on persons, who have derelict vehicles on Council parapets and reserves to take the necessary steps to have them removed, even as the clean-up campaign gains steady momentum,” Mayor Green said.
He also said that he was concerned with the length of time it takes for building plans to be approved. City Engineer, Mr. Colvern Venture, was asked to explain why the process to approve building plans is seen to be so long.
The Engineer stated, “The City Engineer Department is not responsible for delaying the approval of building plans”. He further noted that plans may have to go to other organizations for approval; these include Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA).”
He said that for plans to be approved, the owners must confirm to certain requirements and their bills at (GWI) Guyana Water Inc. must be settled.
He explained that in some cases plans may not be in order. The Engineer, however, committed to put in place, systems to ensure the expedient approval of building plans.
Abandoned buildings are known for anchorage for criminal activities and take away from the beauty of the City. Such abandoned buildings pose a serious threat to the lives of those who occupy them and passers-by.
