DEAR EDITOR,
I write this letter because it would be wrong of my colleagues and I to return to our home countries and not mention what we would have observed this time on the election campaign.
This is was our second visit to Guyana, but our first visit to Region Ten. We came to observe the election campaign of Region Ten, specifically because of the rift that was present in this region. We decided to observe because of our interest in investing in this region. We would have worked with persons from the previous government and Region Ten was of major interest to them.
Anyway, while travelling we found Linden to be the most interesting place of the entire region. They had a lot of very young people speaking on their platform and the energy there was great.
The women of this part of the region are commendable and were able to bring out their men-folk not only to the meetings, but also to vote. They could also represent well their political position. One of these women that stood out to us was a young woman whose name we found out to be LaToya Williams-Howard.
My colleagues and I decided to call her a jewel because we rarely see such raw, untrained talent when it comes to public speaking and young people in Guyana. We never got the chance to meet her in person or speak to her directly, but we were able to hear her speak several times not only on the campaign trail but also at some community meetings held by their regional chairman Sharma Solomon and a another young lady named Vanessa Kissoon.
Even though we were not of the APNU+AFC coalition, we had some friends of some friends who helped us to get into these meetings. This young lady was very eloquent in her deliveries and had my colleagues and I spellbound at times when she spoke. We were shocked to find out that she was not a candidate on the APNU+AFC list.
She was a rare find and we decided to get someone to speak to her to switch to the PPP/C, but when we heard the raw emotion and great dislike for the government, there was no point in going forward with trying to convince her to switch.
We more convinced of this fact whenever she was given the opportunity to speak against the government. She gave an outstanding speech at a place called Beauty Street. She would have convinced me personally to vote for APNU+AFC if I could have voted.
From the young speakers on the APNU+AFC campaign trail she was the most intelligent, eloquent and did her research. Another time we heard her speak at a place called Wisroc, and we heard people talking about how she made them want to go and vote, and some even went and shook her hands after her speech.
To look at this petite woman you would not believe she could be so brave and positive and have such strength in her words, though emotional at times.
APNU+AFC you need to recognize the work done by the women of this region in which would have done you well. If not, you will lose the support of these women.
We are not trying to dictate to your government, but we just had to mention what we observed before we return to India. It would have been wrong of us not to mention at least one of the young people and their effort to help you win the election. We can safely say that APNU+AFC won Region 10 fairly, no exceptions.
