Acting out of frustration, a mother of six, Jasodra Mangoor ‘called’ Shanta, 58, set herself ablaze at her 118 Courbane Park, Annandale home, on Wednesday around 22:00 hours. She is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) nursing third degree burns to 43 per cent of her body.
According to reports the woman was constantly abused by her children, especially her youngest child, so she decided that enough was enough. In the presence of her children and son-in-law the woman opted to pour kerosene on her body.
According the woman’s niece, Melissa, the woman’s daughter had held unto her hand to stop her from burning herself, but she was able to drag her hand free and run into a room, in which she locked herself.
After the woman set herself afire, the door to the room had to be broken down by a neighbour who assisted in rushing the badly burnt Mangoor to the GPHC.
One of the woman’s neighbours was in disbelief. He said that it was just earlier that he had paid her for scrubbing his steps. She did not appear to be unhappy. Mangoor works as a domestic.
Both neighbours and relatives described her to be a very hard working woman, who worked feverishly to support her six children in the absence of her husband.
The woman’s sister-in-law wailed after seeing her condition. “Since meh see Shanta meh know she na gon mek am.” The woman cried, “Ow Shanta wa mek yo guh burn yaself… You could’ve come out the house fa ease ya head.”
