Scores of people flocked the busy Broad & Saffon Streets, Charlestown intersection to catch a glimpse of a container, which had fallen off of a truck at approximately 15:00 hrs yesterday.
The container belongs to Richard Jaisingh & Sons Company. One of the company’s mechanics, who identified himself as Shawn Singh, said that the company was yet to confirm where the container was being transported.
The driver of the vehicle, who was said to be employed with “De Emperor Trucking Service”, was nowhere to be seen, and reports reaching this newspaper indicate that he fled soon after the incident.
A male eyewitness told Kaieteur News, “the truck driver was coming at a fast speed as he was approaching the turn”. He said that as soon as the truck began to turn onto Saffon Street “the container flew off.”
Another man said that he was sitting in his car when he heard the impact.
“I was sitting in my car and all I hear was “BLAM! And when I turn around, the container was on the road.”
Many of those who live in and work in proximity to the scene of the incident, expressed concern at the fact that most persons driving container trucks take advantage of that particular turn.
“Speeding on this turn is a regular thing for them; they don’t ever take their time” one man explained. He added that persons are becoming more and more concerned about their safety, since “at the rate these drivers going, a container could fall on anybody car or somebody walking on the road, and they could lose their life.”
Questions of how effective the body charged with ensuring that containers are properly secured on trucks before they head onto the roadways arose, since this is not the first time that something of this nature has happened.
When this newspaper contacted Works Minister Robeson Benn, he promised that he would look into the matter.
Attempts to contact the Traffic Chief for a comment on the matter were futile.
