Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a prison officer to jail yesterday after it was alleged he had a quantity of marijuana in his possession.
The charge laid before Clayton Johnson, of 94 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, alleged that on March 17, at the Camp Street prison he had 22 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
It was further alleged that Johnson, on the same day, at the Camp Street prison had 16 packs of cigarettes in his possession.
Johnson pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Police inspector Michael Grant’s told the court that on the day in question at around 09:20hrs, the police acting on information went to an office and found the defendant. The officers told Johnson of the information they received.
A search was conducted on his person and the marijuana was found in his crutch, while a pack of cigarettes was found in his shoes. Johnson was then taken to the Alberttown Police Station, where the substance was weighed in his possession.
Grant objected to bail citing the nature and gravity of the offence. He also pointed out that no special reasons were advanced to the court.
Johnson will make his next court appearance on April 7.
