Dear Sir/Madam,
The opposition is making a lot of noise about the appointment of the new Commissioner of Police. I wonder if this is due to the election fever when the race becomes race and tends to end in race.
When commissioner (serving) Felix conversation with Williams came to light (protection of the criminals) there was silence; there was no call for resignation. He was allowed to continue into retirement with full benefits.
When Commissioner (serving) Greene was accused of rape, the opposition was once again silent; there were no calls. (Editor’s Note: The APNU had called for Greene’s removal: See Kaieteur News headline of April 15, 2012 “APNU calls for Henry Greene’s removal”)
Commissioner Brummel acted and was subsequently sworn in as Commissioner of Police in the absence of a Police Service Commission (PSC). Mr. Granger gave no objection to his appointment and did not see any breach of constitution.
The constitution states that the President shall appoint a Commissioner of Police based on recommendation from the PSC and meaningful consultation with leader of the opposition.
Granger objected to the appointment of Seelal Persaud on the basis that two ranks that were charged with torture were promoted during Seelal’s tenure as acting Commissioner of Police.
One predecessor of another race was sitting Commissioner of Police when they were re-instated, the case having been dismissed in the court; the opposition was silent. Seemingly it is ok for them to be members of the force but not so for promotion.
One of those promotions was made by the PSC (which the Commissioner has no control of) and in which the opposition has representation; there were no objections and as such the opposition’s representation recommended the promotion.
Now if Granger was so peeved with the appointment why did he ask this very COP for protection? Ah, it is because it has nothing to do with professional conduct, it has to do with race.
Mr. Granger, stop playing the race game and allow us Guyanese to do our jobs and live peacefully. As for IAC, do your homework and tell me if I am wrong.
I urge all Guyanese to go out and vote and do not forget that a vote for the AFC is a vote for the PNC.
