Approximately 1,000 GT&T landline and data customers in the downtown Georgetown area are without service following damage to the company’s cable cabinet facility.
This information was confirmed by GT&T public relations officer, Allison Parker, who said that technicians have already begun working on easing the disruption.
According to information received, the company’s cable cabinet facility was damaged some time between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning after a vehicle struck the cabinet. Up to yesterday afternoon, the vehicle was yet to be identified, Parker said.
Parker explained the company first received word of a problem when numerous complaints were lodged by affected customers.
She said tests were then conducted and a fault was recognised at the facility at the Main and Middle Streets junction. GT&T then conducted a physical inspection of the area identified.
Parker also said that an engineering estimate has already been completed. However, she said, actual civil work is yet to be conducted. She said the company could not give a timeline for the full resumption of service until today.
GT&T said that a number of entities including State House, Attorney General’s Office, Ministries of Finance and Culture, and the Prime Minister’s residence are affected by the disruption.
Other customers south of Lamaha Street, West of Carmichael Street, east of Water Street (extending to Demerara River) and north of Church Street are also affected.
“Vandalism, careless excavation and incidents such as this recent one continue to affect the delivery of service to GT&T’s customers since financial and human resources both have to be diverted to effect repairs to the services,” GT&T said in a release.
Meanwhile, approximately 500 East Bank Demerara residents are currently being affected by vandalism in the New Hope area.
GT&T said that several spans of the company’s cable were removed by vandals.
“We continue to appeal to the public to say something if you see something, by calling our confidential vandalism hotline number 0908. The disruption of communication facilities can have major adverse effects on the security, business and social life of all citizens,” GT&T said.
