Alarmed by the continued campaign of terror and intimidation by the ruling party against the Amerindian people of Guyana.
In wake of the recent arrest of Moco Moco Toshao, Mark George, over allegations of rape, the coalition party, A Partnership for National Unity- Alliance for Change (APNU-AFC), says that the village leader was a political prisoner.
George, who was released from police custody on Friday, was arrested by the police four days after he barred President Donald Ramotar from entering the Moco Moco Village in North Rupununi.
The police had said that a report was made that George raped a 13-year-old student from the Moco Moco Primary School.
The Toshao was however arrested three days after the report was made to the police.
The APNU- AFC in a statement yesterday said that the party is alarmed by the continued campaign of terror and intimidation by the ruling party against the Amerindian people of Guyana.
The party believes that the allegation made against George was manufactured by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).
According to the release, it was confirmed that the charges were made only after representatives from the ruling party contacted the relatives of the accuser.
The political opposition asserted, “The manufacture of charges is an old and desperate PPP tactic used to punish persons who do not subjugate themselves to the wishes of Freedom House.”
It said, too, “The Alliance is of the view that these charges were manufactured purely as a means to victimize Toshao George for his principled stance for requesting that the requirements of the Amerindian Peoples Act be respected.”
The party is however confident that based on information available; once the matter is thoroughly investigated George will be vindicated.
The coalition accused the PPP government of treating Amerindians without dignity and as if they are second class citizens.
“APNU-AFC recalls President Donald Ramotar’s comments to Aishalton teacher, John Adams, followed by him being slapped by a Presidential guard and also the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs Permanent Secretary Nigel Dharamlall’s contempt and threats towards our Amerindian people.”
The release added, “This is another clear example of the PPP blatantly using the resources of the state to conduct their elections campaign.”
The coalition then reminded of a statement made by the former president, Bharrat Jagdeo, who headed the Commonwealth Observer Mission to Sri Lanka, last month.
According to the release, the former President said, “The election campaign period was marked by an unequal contest with extensive, large-scale abuse of state resources. They noted the comprehensive bias of state media against the Common Opposition Candidate’s campaign; the use of military personnel and public officials to support the President’s campaign; the use of Government monies, gifts and other inducements; and the widespread use of state-owned public transport by the incumbent.”
The coalition in its statement questioned whether the former President and high ranking officer from the ruling party openly admitted that what applies in Sri Lanka as acceptable standards must not to apply in Guyana.
