A four-man team of boxers would be representing Guyana at this year’s Horace Phillips Memorial boxing tournament scheduled for March 14 in Barbados. Guyana Boxing Association president Steve Ninvalle said that team Guyana would be made up of four boxers and one manager/coach.
In addition, the team would be accompanied by a local referee/judge. According to Ninvalle the GBA Coaches Commission has been tasked with submitting a shortlist of fighters for the competition to the executive during this week.
The local team is expected to depart for Barbados on March 13 and return two days later. The Horace Phillips Memorial is an annual tournament held in March in Barbados in honour of a former Liaison Officer of the Barbados Boxing Association who died 20 years ago.
The tournament attracts fighters from across the Caribbean. Over the years Guyanese boxers have dominated the competition and just last year returned home with a five medals.
Clairmont Gibson, Ron Smith, Delon Charles, Diwani Lampkin and Michael April allowed Guyana’s flag to fly high at the last tournament held at the Springer Memorial School in St Michael. Lampkin, Charles and Smith secured gold medals, while Gibson and April collected silvers.
