A 38-year-old man who reportedly used a piece of wood and beat his 83-year-old bedridden father to death was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday.
Ali Mohamed, who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, is charged with murdering his father Mohamed Suleiman on January 13, last, at their Lot 38 Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara home. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Some of their relatives were present in the courtroom during the arraignment. They cried during the preliminary hearing.
Inspector Stephen Telford, a Prosecutor attached to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), explained that last Tuesday the sister of the accused called him for his medication.
According to Telford, it was then that Mohamed armed himself with a piece of wood and dealt the woman several lashes causing her to run out of the house.
As the sister sought refuge elsewhere, the Prosecutor said that the accused went into the bedroom where his father, who had been bedridden after he suffered a stroke, was and dealt the elderly man several lashes with the wood.
The elderly man was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre then he was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He subsequently succumbed to the injuries he sustained.
Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-Fat represented the accused. He said that Mohamed was “sick in his mind” and requested that he be examined by a psychiatrist to ascertain whether he is fit to stand trial.
A psychiatric evaluation was ordered and the case is set to be called again on February 27.
