No arrests in East Canje failed hijacking
Police in Berbice have so far been unsuccessful in arresting any suspects for the failed

hijacking and stabbing of East Canje taxi driver, Balram Khanakumar, 23, of 75 New Street, Cumberland. Up to yesterday, the car that was involved in the incident, grey Toyota Allion, PRR 9966, still remained in police custody at the Central Police Station compound.
Khanakumar was discharged on Sunday afternoon from the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was nursing eight stab wounds. He is currently on medication and is fearful. He spent much of the day yesterday at the Central Police Station assisting the police with their investigations and giving statements.
Last Friday, shortly after 19:00 hrs, two men entered Khanakumar’s vehicle in the vicinity of Pitt Street, saying that they were heading into East Canje and they informed Khanakumar that two other persons were to be picked up at Trinity Street as well as a female in the vicinity of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) at Garrison Road.
He picked up two other males at Trinity Street, but there was no female, he said, at NATI. It was a few minutes later under the Canje River Bridge where he was brutally stabbed and a fight ensued for the car.
The key ring of the car apparently was torn apart from the keys during the struggle. The key remained in the ignition and Khanakumar regained control of the vehicle and sped off to his aunt at New Street, Cumberland in a bloody state. He was bleeding from the back, head and hands.
Khanakumar said that he is ready and willing to identify his hijackers in an Identification Parade since he can vividly remember their faces.
Relatives are anxious for the police to apprehend the perpetrators. They stated that the entire car seats in the front portion of the vehicle would have to be replaced because of the blood.
