The ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) yesterday lauded government’s move to advance $2.1 B to millers in order for early payments to be made to cash strapped rice farmers.
Last week, Government made two sets of payments. The first set was to the tune of $600M. Government later released another $1.5B to assist in paying off rice farmers. This accumulated $2.1B is said to have been released from the Petrocaribe account.
Farmers were owed about $3B; after payments of the latest advances the amount owed to rice farmers will be less than $1B.
PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee, commended the actions of the government.
Rohee told media operatives that the PPP is aware of the hardships faced by farmers when they do not receive payments on time. He said that the ruling party wants the relevant authorities including millers to do everything within their power to ensure prompt payments at the best prices available for the produce on the market.
The General Secretary said that the PPP is thankful that the Venezuelan Government purchase rice from Guyana under the Petrocaribe facility at prices that are satisfactory to farmers.
He used the opportunity to commend rice farmers for “record production levels.”
Rohee said that it is indicative “not only of the diligence and hard work by farmers but also of improved drainage and irrigation systems and better access dams put in place by the PPP/C administration which have resulted in a much greater acreage of land under cultivation. This coupled with new and improved varieties have significantly impacted on production and productivity levels.”
Rohee also called on farmers to be vigilant and not to allow persons with “obvious political agendas to mislead them and in the process play into the hands of those who ruined the once vibrant industry under the PPP administration of the 1957-1964 periods.”
He added that the PPP is aware that there are those who are seeking to play politics with the rice industry by spreading all manner of misinformation in order to score “cheap political points.” He then called on farmers to reject “these wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
Rohee, on behalf of the PPP said that famers should remain assured of its continued support to the further growth of the rice industry and well being our farmers.
