Ravens’ Coach, Darcel Harris (right) joins his team with the show of the sign ‘three’ signaling their third straight Phillip George Legacy tournament title at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday night.
After a rocky start in the third Phillip George Legacy tournament, Ravens Basketball Club made light work of Republic Bank Nets to bounce away with their third title in as many tournaments at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Saturday night.
Nets had beaten Ravens in the group stages of the tournament, forcing the top club to dig deep in the preliminary rounds to reach the final; notably, in their early loss against Nets, Coach, Darcel Harris was visibly absent from the Ravens bench.
Harris was absent for more games and Ravens struggle continued up until they had to overcome Pacesetters to move out of the group, which they did. Saturday night was their crowning moment with a 72-60 revenge thrashing of Republic Bank Nets.
Guard/forward, Akeem Kanhai finished with 20 points while Ryan Gullen had 14 points, Ryan Stephney 12 points and Dominic Vincente 11 points for Ravens. Jermaine Slater had six points but literally lived on the board with 12 rebounds.
Forward, Drumson McCaulley was the leading scorer for the Nets with 15 points while Pellam Doris contributed 14 points.
Ravens showed their all-round superiority, taking advantage of Nets, which Kanhai emphasized with two massive dunks.
Nets just could not score; it was as if Ravens had broken them down to fine detail and produced a winning blueprint.
The choke began in the first quarter with a 22-12 lead for Ravens, then with both hands firmly around Nets’ neck, Ravens squeezed for a 42-24, 18-point lead, at halftime that centre/forward,
Slater punctuated with an awesome one-handed dunk.
Ravens’ aim was clear: beat Nets badly for beating us in the first round, and they did just that with a 22-point lead at the end of the third quarter. Nets were neutralised and could not bag the Ravens, who did as pleased on the offensive end.
Nets went on a run in the final period in a push to prevent embarrassment, outscoring Ravens 23-13 but it was much too late to create any come-back, Cinderella story. Ravens ensured that they owned the Phillip George title with a third straight win.
Meanwhile, Eagles defeated Colts 61-56 to win the Phillip George Legacy Division III title in an intense clash. Travis Belgrave scored 14 points for Eagles; Japheth Hackett and Lyndon Wilson had 13 points apiece for the win. Dellon LaRose was the only player to score in double digits for the Colts with 12 points. (Edison Jefford)
