Narine, a taxi driver at the Timerhi/Soesdyke Junction, was beaten by former prison warden, Sherwin Stewart, last Thursday night. After being pronounced ‘brain dead’, the victim’s family saw it fit to release him.
The two men were involved in a fight. Stewart became offended by remarks Narine made the evening in question. According to family members, Narine and other taxi drivers were “making jokes”, when 37-year-old Stewart, was walking past the group.
These jokes elicited a reaction from Stewart who confronted and began to curse Narine. The scuffle then escalated into a cuff-to-cuff fight, which needed the help of the surrounding taxi-drivers to separate Narine and Stewart.
The victim’s brother-in-law, who requested to be unnamed, said that he received an alarming call from Narine around 20:30 hours. In the phone call the relative said that he heard, “Bai loose me jersey!” repeated several times, along with scuffling and shouting.
Distressed by the call, Narine’s brother-in-law made his way to the scene of the fight.
The fight ended and Narine tried to leave the scene. As he was getting into his car Stewart pulled out his badge to show that he was a ‘police officer’. He subsequently announced that he was arresting Narine, who then tried to reason.
As this was happening, the victim’s brother-in-law arrived on the scene. He managed to talk to Stewart, telling the officer that he didn’t want any problems. Narine was in an awful state, said the relative, and seeing this, the two were allowed to leave the scene.
“He suffered blows to the head and neck,” explained the relative, “and after he took a shower, we see he had bruises on he elbows too”. Despite this he said that Narine was able to walk and drive home, with no signs of any severe injuries.
However, it was when Narine was home that things took a turn for the worse. According to family members, he complained of pains in his neck and head around 1:00hours. The victim even started to vomit. He was later given painkillers by his wife but it did not help his condition.
At 3:00hours Narine’s wife noticed that he wasn’t responding to the medication. It was related that his eyes were not opening and that his body got stiff. Narine’s family decided to rush him to the Woodlands Hospital.
While on the way there they also tried to report the matter to the Timehri Police Station. However, according to relatives, the station refused to take the report, stating that the unconscious Narine was “a drunk man”.
The family continued to contact the police station as Narine was in the hospital but said that they received no response.
According to the family, Narine suffered from extensive brain damage and a ruptured blood vessel in the neck. He was put on life support as part of his treatment. His condition did not improve. He was taken off the machine at 15:00hours, and died minutes later.
Since then Stewart has been in custody at the Timerhi Police Station.
