Charwayne Walker stirs the knowledge of our readers this week with the 1964 tour by Trinidad and Tobago to Guyana.
Did you know that Trinidad and Tobago led by Sedley Joseph thrashed British Guiana National Team 4 – Nil in a five match series in 1964? Trinidad and Tobago deplaned Atkinson Airbase with three members that toured the United Kingdom with the West Indies Football team in 1959; Doyle Griffith, Ronnie Gray and Tyrone DeLa Bastide.
British Guiana led by Hubert Braithwaite (Snr.), who was also a member of the 1959 West Indies Football Team toured to the UK, lost the series opener by 2 goals to one at GCC Bourda, the goal scorers for the Soca Warriors were Andy Aleong and Ronnie Gray while Ingram Layne netted for British Guiana.
In Game 2 played at the same venue, Trinidad and Tobago led by helmet-trick (4) by star winger Andy Aleong destroyed British Guiana 6 – 1. Patrick Britton scored the consolation goal for the Land of Many Waters. The visitors wrapped up the series with a 4 -1 victory in the third match. Richard Nieves led the assault with a double, while Christian (Bugs) Mendes and Ronnie Gray scored a goal each. Edmond (Screw) Richmond scored the only British Guiana goal displaying a vastly improved all round performance. British Guiana drew the fourth match one all. The prolific Andy Aleong was the Trini goal scorer, while the British Guiana hit man was Patsy Pieters. The Soca Warriors won the fifth and final match by two goals to one. The series was contested at the world famous GCC Bourda.
