Joseph Semple, 41, a farmer of Onverwagt Village, West Coast Berbice was found floating in a West Coast Berbice canal. His body was discovered face down in the canal around 16:00 hrs on Wednesday by a group of boys who had gone to the area to swim. At the time of the discovery the man’s face was badly disfigured; his throat, face, tongue, eyeballs and ears were all mutilated.
According to residents he might have been attacked by piranha, a man-eating fish.
Semple lived in the back lands of the village and was engaged in small scale farming. The man was seen earlier in the day drinking and was last seen around 14:00 hrs on his way home.
Residents stated that for Semple to get to his home, he would have had to cross the canal, something that he does on a regular basis. He would either swim or walk over depending on the level of the water. It is believed that he fell in the water and that might have caused his demise.
The body was taken out and ferried to the Fort Wellington Hospital where it is awaiting a post mortem examination.
Police are investigating.
