An elderly couple was beaten and robbed of over $1M in cash and jewelry by three gunmen early yesterday at their Lot 83 Plantation Adelphi, East Canje Berbice home.
Dhallim Chand, 56, his wife, Betty, 56 and their six-year-old grandson, Kevon were bound and beaten repeatedly around 01:30 hrs by the bandits who eventually secured the loot and escaped.
The horrific ordeal lasted for more than an hour.
Kaieteur News was told that the three masked gunmen gained entry into the couple’s two storey house through an open window in the upper flat of the property.
According to Dhallim Chand, he was aroused by a ‘tumbling’ sound and when he opened his eyes, he noticed a man in a mask sitting on his wife’s stomach with a gun pointed to her face.
The 56-year-old man who operates a grocery store at his home said that there was nothing he could have done at the time since two more bandits appeared.
He claimed that one of the bandits demanded that he be quiet.
“They tie me and my grandson up with the phone cord and they ask my wife where the money was and she took them to it,” Mr. Chand related.
He added that after collecting the cash the men tore a bed sheet and tied his wife before assaulting them with their weapon.
“Two of them had knives and one of them had a gun. The one with the gun hit my wife in her head and they beat me and my grandson.”
According to the elderly man, the bandits threw their landline phone in water while they escaped with all the cellular phones that were in the house.
The bandits also carted off a haversack full of cigarettes.
Chand said that although yesterday’s robbery was not the first they had experienced, it was in fact the worst since it was the first time they were assaulted by gunmen.
“Small thief does come but we never really get beat and in the past, only one thief come in on us,” Chand said.
He added that although his grandson is only six-years-old, the bandits did not spare him.
“They tie him and they beat him too just like they did with us.”
This newspaper was told that the man’s wife had to be taken to the hospital where she received a few stitches for the wound she sustained.
The police are investigating the robbery, but no one has so far been arrested.
