The state’s power company has long recognised that internal corruption has played a part in its failure to reduce

technical and commercial losses. And so it was yesterday that the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) hatched a sting operation that shocked an ex-employee who dashed from the scene after senior operatives arrived.
According to GPL, one of its technicians, Marvin Low-Koon, whose service was terminated in August last for corruption, is presently on the run after the operation in Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara. Low-Koon made a run for it after seeing his seniors closing in on him. A complaint was filed at the Leonora Police Station.
Officials of the power company disclosed that based on information received, pertaining to GPL personnel terrorizing persons to pay bribes, the company launched a sting operation.
“The ex-employee was found with current GPL employees soliciting bribes after Low-Koon would have taken bribes to install bypasses on meters to steal electricity. After installing illegal connections, Low-Koon would contact other GPL operatives and pinpoint businesses and residential consumers whom he had installed bypasses for. The team would then descend on the unsuspecting consumers and fleece them money with various threats,” one official explained.
Despite efforts, GPL said it failed to rein in its technical and commercial losses which continue to remain a significant challenge.
“Further, issues of corruption (both internally and externally) have affected gains on loss reduction. GPL continues to be plagued by high staff turnover in the Loss Reduction Division. In spite of the challenges, the company will continue to pursue a menu of initiatives geared towards reducing losses,” another official revealed.
GPL has been carrying out many raids and removing thousands of illegal meters, bypasses and connections. Many staffers were also dismissed for being involved in illegal transactions.
