‘We need a time for a good life for all Guyanese’; ‘Save our NDCs; Save our MCC’; ‘Yes to democracy; No to dictatorship’; ‘Yes for a good life, No to corruption’, were some of the slogans written on the placard of the protestors in Berbice, as A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Berbice, continued its countrywide protest.
The aim is to continue the protests until the current administration holds Local Government Elections (LGE). The main opposition party has launched a series of national protests, calling on the Donald Ramotar Administration to hold LGE as early as possible. These elections have not been held since 1994.
On Tuesday, APNU members lined the Region Six Administration Complex in Vrymen’s Erven, New Amsterdam and held a peaceful placard demonstration exercise.
“We need answers. The country has 65 NDCs and six Municipalities— 71 areas that need elections— we need new councillors,” he added. APNU Region Six Councillor, Jevaughn Stephen, beckoned the call for LGE because he believes that power must be restored to the people.
He noted that if one were to travel to the various NDCs across the country, one would clearly recognize how “underfunded” they are, “and we have councillors who have been elected there 22 years ago— some have vacated their seats and nobody is there now— and between Ganga Persaud and Norman Whittaker, they went around installing Interim Management Committees (IMC’s) which makes no sense!”
Stephens added that APNU wants the local people to have power to represent their particular communities and that President Donald Ramotar and Mr. Clement Rohee cannot be at Freedom House, “and direct the show.”
Mr. Samuel Monah, another protestor, said that this government and the President promised this nation that the Constitution would be respected. “From 1992 to now— total disrespect has been shown to the Constitution…they have deferred local government elections several times and it is time for a restoration of that privilege, that the people can manage their own resources in their own environment.”
Another APNU Member, Ms Esther Stephens noted that she is looking forward eagerly for LGE by January 2015, and that she was participating in the protest exercise to send a strong message to the Government.
“We must have the rights in our hands and we have the rights as voters in this country and so, we want to have our democratic right to vote for our people to run the 71 NDC’s in Guyana.”
Similar protests were held at Rose Hall Town and Corriverton.
