– Fourth man on the run
Almost four months after a fracas which occurred in the New Amsterdam Prison in which four high profile prisons
(members of a gang) were seriously injured. Three men (of another gang) have been charged with attempted murder including the mastermind and leader of the gang. A fourth man who was released from the prison about two weeks ago is on the run.
Randolph Rodrigues called ‘Shoulders’ and Jason Mc Kenzie called ‘Psycho’ – in jail on murder charges -and Colwin Cort called ‘Dutchie’ who was on remand on a charge of wounding, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus yesterday in the Sisters Magistrate Court, East Bank Berbice and were refused bail.
The fourth member of the gang, Alan Samaroo called ‘Scare Them’, who was incarcerated on a charge of robbery under arms, was freed a few weeks ago and has since disappeared from the jurisdiction.
The men are accused of, on Tuesday 23rd May 2014 at the New Amsterdam Prison, unlawfully and maliciously wounding four fellow inmates who were members of the other gang. Those injured were Davendra Harricharran, called ‘Bara’, 27, of Nigg Squatting area, Corentyne, Berbice, who was on remand on a charge of robbery under arms; Adbussulum Azimulla called ‘Sato’, 31, of Lot 183 Hampshire ,Corentyne, Berbice, who is on remand for murder; Quamy Bhagwandin, 32 of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, who was incarcerated on a charge of break and enter and larceny and Clarence Williams called ‘Wild Hog’, 41, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam who is incarcerated on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter the prison melee was a reprisal for what took place earlier in the day,
when one of Rodrigues’ gang members, Kevin James, was beaten by the members of the other gang.
The situation was quickly brought under control and the four wounded men were rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital before they were transferred to the GPHC.
A subsequent search of the facility in the evening had unearthed four cutlasses, cell phones, SIM cards and batteries, penknives and scissors, among other illegal items.
An inquiry was subsequently launched by the authorities.
Files were prepared and sent to the DPP for advice and charges were recommended against the four perpetrators.
The accused will have to return to court on September 30.
