The cane-cutter who was severely burnt in a “freak accident” at his Patentia Squatting Area residence on Sunday last, remains in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Emanuel Ramdoo, 34, suffered first degree burns and is currently battling for his life. According to Ramdoo’s mother, Gita Lakeram, the injured man told her while she was accompanying him in an ambulance to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, that he lit his kerosene-stove and accidentally overturned it on himself spilling the kerosene and causing the fire to set him alight.
According to neighbours who rescued Ramdoo, when they entered his home from which heavy smoke was emanating, they found that he had already become a “human torch.” They immediately doused him with trench water in an effort to save his life.
In an interview with this publication yesterday, Lakeram said that the accident was caused by her son’s intoxication from a wedding he celebrated the previous night.
Ramdoo was still “hung-over” at the time of the accident, which occurred around 9: 30 hours.
Lakeram noted that her children left his house in the morning to visit her residence, while he promised to cook for them at his home.
She denied allegations by the neighbours, that her son “attempted suicide.”
Neighbours told the suicide story to Ramdoo’s wife, who severed ties with him three years ago.
They accused the cane-cutter of frequently drinking after the separation, and recalled episodes where the man would cry loudly for his wife and display suicidal behavior whenever he consumed alcohol.
After discovering his mattress completely burnt in the house, residents of the area were confident that Ramdoo had set himself ablaze on his bed, and then stumbled into the kitchen.
Lakeram said that she did not receive an explanation from her son concerning his burnt mattress, but was confident that he did not attempt suicide. She said that she is currently awaiting his recovery to gather more information.
Lakeram insisted that these allegations were false, as her son parted with his wife three years ago, and would have committed suicide over his ex-wife much earlier, if that was his intention.
