Forklift driver on causing death charge granted $1M bail

A forklift driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a crash on Dennis Street,

Campbellville, Georgetown, which claimed the life of a senior bookbinder attached to the University of Guyana.
One week after the accident, Balgobin Persaud, 69, identified as the man behind the wheel of the forklift, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday. He was granted $1M bail.
The court heard that on August 18, last, on Dennis Street, Persaud drove in a manner dangerous to the public while piloting a forklift, thereby causing the death of 51-year-old Latchman Sukdeo. Persaud pleaded not guilty and applied for bail.
The case was prosecuted by Police Corporal, Seon Blackman who said that the accident occurred around 08:30 hours two Mondays ago.
He explained that the driver had left an establishment in Campbellville, and when he turned onto Dennis Street, two metal spikes from the forklift collided with the motorcycle that Sukdeo was riding.
The injured man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he succumbed while receiving treatment.
Blackman said that the matter was reported and subsequent investigations led to Persaud being arrested and charged.
Persaud’s lawyer, Lawrence Hamilton, asked that he be released on reasonable bail. The lawyer told the Court that he is married with three children and is not a flight risk.
His application was met with no objections from the Prosecution who informed the Court that Persaud had been placed on station bail and had been cooperating fully with the Police during the investigation.
Bail was granted and the case is set to be called again before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 25.
