Activities in the Legend Classic Basketball competition continued over the past weekend and Smythfield Rockers of New Amsterdam swept aside Hardliners 58-41when the two teams clashed at the Ithaca Basketball Court, West Bank Berbice.
Smythfield Rockers started the game aggressively and amassed an 18-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. That team continued to pile on the points and by the end of the first half, had amassed a 9 points lead at 26-17.
They maintained the advantage up to the third quarter and eventually ended the game at a comfortable winning score of 58-41. Tyrone Dey top scored for the winners with 26 points with support from Jason Fraser who scored seventeen. Daymon Edwards scored 9 points, the most for the Hardliners.
The competition continues on Sunday with East Canje Knights coming up against Fyrish Black Sharks in a game scheduled for the Fyrish Court. Six teams, categorized in two groups, are battling for top honours with Group ‘A’ comprising Jammers and Fyrish Black Sharks, both of Corentyne and Canje Knights of East Canje.
Group B comprises Smythfield Rockers, Ithaca Hardliners of West Berbice and New Amsterdam Warriors. The winning and runner up teams will receive cash and other prizes while outstanding individual players will also receive special prizes.
The competition is being played on a round-robin basis at the group stages with the top two teams in each group emerging to contest the semi finals which then determines the finalist.
The competition is being sponsored by Ponai’s Pharmacy of Rose hall Town and Nand Persaud Group of Companies of Corentyne.
