Dear Editor,
It is unfortunate that I have to write this letter, but it is high time that I put pen to paper and highlight an issue that has been occurring for the past couple of years.
First, I must state that I am a businessman whose business is located in the heart of Georgetown. According to my knowledge, it is City Council’s job to clean and maintain the environs of Georgetown, free of cost. This has not been happening.
As the proprietor of my business I have been forced to do the unthinkable, that is, pay the very clerks of City Council, who are responsible for cleaning our City, an enormous amount of money every month in order to ensure that my drains are clean, clear and free-flowing. One should note that I am not the one causing the blockage.
I am sick and tired of this and I feel that this has to stop immediately. As proprietors, we already pay taxes of all forms, why should we have to add “under-handed taxes” to the list.
One should do a background check of all the assets that these clerks and their respective bosses possess, against their net monthly salary, and see if it adds up.
I have chosen this form of anonymity because I am fearful of victimization and being targeted.
I am quite certain that I am not the only one paying this form of illegal taxation to these unscrupulous persons. Therefore, I am asking for someone to look into this matter and put an end to this high-class lawlessness that I along with my fellow businessmen and women have helped to prolong.
