A French Guiana national, who claims he came to these shores to get married, was fined $30,000 on an illegal entry charge when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Guilty: Marcieno Browne
Marcieno Browne, 34, pleaded guilty before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and was ordered to pay the fine.
The charge instituted against Browne detailed that on July 3, last, at Charity, Essequibo, he entered Guyana by sea and disembarked without the consent of an Immigration Officer.
Speaking through an interpreter, Brown said that he came here to get married.
The accused explained that when he arrived in Guyana the Immigration Office at Charity was closed. He said that returning was no option since the vessel with which he came had departed. Browne said that he was left with no choice but to venture to Georgetown.
When asked about any previous charges or convictions, he insisted that he was never placed before any court of law.
The Chief Magistrate then fined him. In default of payment, he would have to serve three months in prison.
