The life of a young factory operator of Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo)’s Albion Estate, was snuffed out around
06:40 hrs yesterday on the No. 11 Public Road, East Coast Berbice, minutes after he left his residence on his way to work.
Eyewitnesses say Vickram Ramlakhan, 26, of No.11 Village, was standing at the side of the road awaiting transportation when a speeding car swerved off the road and struck him down. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The victim sustained major head injuries.
According to information, the car, a Toyota Allion, reportedly being driven by a 19-year-old of Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara, was travelling at a fast rate of speed. The driver was said to be heading towards Corentyne, on his way to Moleson Creek. It is understood that his car was behind another vehicle which he tried to overtake.
He realized late that he could not make it because a bus was almost upon him from the opposite direction. He then tried to undertake the vehicle, but a car was parked there and in trying to avoid a collision he swerved and slammed into Ramlakhan who was standing on the parapet.
The impact hurled the man into the air. He landed approximately fifteen feet away from the point of impact. The car hit a lamp post and ended up in a trench.
The driver reportedly stated that he decided to choose that route so as to avoid a more serious accident. But residents believe that if the driver had been more careful the accident could have been avoided.
Meanwhile, the dead man’s wife, Kavita Ramlakhan, 23, was inconsolable when the media visited her at her mother’s home. Amidst tears, in a barely audible tone, the woman recalled that her husband had just left home when she heard an impact. She said she heard that there was an accident, but did not know that it was her husband. She later rushed to the scene not too far away, only to be told that it was her husband. He had already been removed and rushed to the hospital.
The distraught woman said that she rushed to the hospital where she was informed that her husband had died.
The couple had been married for five years and had no children.
Vickram Ramlakhan was described as a jovial, friendly and hard working person. He leaves to mourn his wife, parents, two sisters and a brother.
Kaieteur News understands one passenger in the vehicle received serious injuries and was hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
