A man who stole a female high school student’s cellular phone, and was nabbed by public-spirited citizens before he could have robbed one of her male colleagues, has been jailed for thirty six (36) months.
Earlier this year, Lexroy Rigby, 30, followed two Global Technology students along Waterloo Street before threatening them with a “sharp metal object” and demanding they hand over their cellular phones. The terrified female student became afraid and handed over her $40,000 BlackBerry cellular phone.
As Rigby turned his focus to the male student, a group of persons who noticed the commotion, came to their rescue.
The assailant tried to flee but the group caught up with him and handed him over to the police. When searched by police ranks, the female student’s cellular phone was found on him.
The Prosecution, which was spearheaded by Corporal Seon Blackman, revealed that further investigations led to Rigby being charged.
When the accused made his first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on April 1, last, he pleaded not guilty when asked to respond to charges for robbery under arms and attempt to commit a felony.
The police had sought to prove that on March 29, last at Waterloo and New Market Streets, Georgetown, while being armed with an offensive weapon, he robbed the female student of a BlackBerry cellular phone valued at $40,000.
It was alleged too, that while being armed with an offensive weapon he attempted to rob the male student of his Blackberry cellular phone valued at $30,000.
Following his plea, he was remanded and a trial was conducted before Magistrate Faith McGusty.
During the trial, the prosecution called upon five witnesses to prove its case against the accused. Rigby had provided the court with two addresses, one in Mahdia and another in Kitty, Georgetown.
Magistrate McGusty yesterday indicated that she had found Rigby guilty as charged and sentenced him to thirty six (36) months imprisonment on each charge.
The jail terms, she instructed, will run concurrently.
