Workshop on regional quality infrastructural policy held
A national meeting on conformity assessment and draft regional policy for quality infrastructure was hosted recently by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) in collaboration with CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ).
GNBS Executive Director Evadnie Enniss noted that the packed workshop underscored that stakeholders understood the importance of standards within their respective businesses and the agency welcomes such a turn out.

Underscoring that the overall conformity assessment is to demonstrate the quality of products and services independently of the manufacturers, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Dhaneshwar Deonarine said “conformity assessment service providers shall pay attention to the national needs, be transparent, be non-discriminatory and avoid unnecessary barriers for trade. In this regard the government has identified its conformity assessment bodies that are in the process of streamlining these agencies to ensure that they are and can meet the requirements of international standards…”
“The conformity assessment body and relevant ministries have commenced the process of implementing the national standards with the assistance of the GNBS and other partners.”
Deonarine said the agricultural sector is one of the largest areas of investment in Guyana’s economy since more than $50 billion is invested in current expenditure annually by large and small scale farming enterprises “…we must maintain our agriculture products to be the leading export sector and the breadbasket of the Caribbean, so I urge the government agencies and key stakeholders to underscore the benefits of having testing certification bodies accredited so that the market share of Guyana’s product can expand and meet the necessary quality requirements.”
He explained that the GNBS is currently completing a needs assessment project which is focused on identifying testing and metrology facilities required to ensure that products are tested by an accredited laboratory and measurements used by industries traceable and acceptable globally.
“Testing will be available for the first time in many areas related to food safety and quality to support the work of the regulations. The GNBS will continue to receive support from the Guyana government to strengthen its capabilities to implement the national quality infrastructure which was launched in 2012.”
