…34 in prison awaiting trial, alarming 28 for murder
Looking smart and slick and ready for the occasion, a 27-member police contingent led the ceremonial opening of the June 2014 session of the Berbice criminal assizes on Tuesday.

The police guard of honour was commanded by Cadet Officer O. Halley with Inspector Dennis Stephen, the parade Inspector and Sergeant Michael Newland. They led the contingent in an impressive display accompanied by the police drum corps.
The salute was taken by Justice Brassington Reynolds, the presiding Judge in the June criminal sessions of the Berbice High Court. The judge was escorted by Commander of ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Brian Joseph and Cadet Officer Williams.
Also accompanying the parade were Senior Superintendent Stephen Mansel, Assistant Superintendents Guy Nurse and W. Ashram, Chief Inspector Gregory Springer, Inspector Seseupaul Jhagroop among others.
When the January session closed on Monday, Senior Superintendent of Prisons and Officer-in-charge of the New Amsterdam Prisons, Linden Cornette reported that there were 28 awaiting trial for murder, while three are for sexual penetration, one for robbery under arms, one for possession of firearm without licence and one for escape from lawful custody.
Four of those are requesting to plead.
