E’bo police gets child protection training
During an interactive discourse, senior members of the Child Protection Agency interfaced with varying ranks of the Guyana Defence Force.
Discussions were primarily centered on child abuse and on being alert in identifying those cases with referrals to both the police and a certified social worker.
Pamela Heywood, a senior officer aligned to the CPA, said that while cases of child abuse and neglect are becoming alarming, especially in the Region, methods are being adopted to address the issue. Ms. Heywood was accompanied by Ms. Precilla Gonsalves, Welfare Officer attached to Region Two.
The programme began with educating the police, who are confronted with cases from time to time.
Ranks who participated in a simple test were reminded to take firm action, especially against those who are culpable of abusing a child, be it physical, sexual, verbal or even denying a child his/her basic rights, which include an education, food, clothing and shelter.
Ranks were also cautioned not to fuel aggressiveness, especially against a minor, who may verbally lash out at them while in custody.
The interactive session, the first of its kind was held, at the Anna Regina Police Station, on Thursday last. The programme was initiated by the Anna Regina Police Women’s Association in collaboration with senior members attached at that station.
Cases of child abuse and child neglect are more prevalent in areas in Charity and the Pomeroon.
