Two times prison escapee and murder and robbery with violence accused, Vinood Gopaul, 24, of 34 Yakusari, Black Bush Polder, on Tuesday appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on two charges and was remanded to prison.
Gopaul was charged with escaping from lawful custody and robbery with violence.
According to Prosecutor, Sergeant Phillip Shariff, while being a prisoner in New Amsterdam, Gopaul escaped from lawful custody. He was remanded to prison until June 9, when he will have to appear at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
Another charge was that on April 22, last, at Yakusari Black Bush Polder, Gopaul while being in company with another and armed with a gun and cutlass, robbed Baijnauth Niwaz, 58, and his wife Kalawattie Niwaz.
It is alleged that Gopaul and his brother Krisendat Seeram, called ‘Apple Boy’, 22, of the same address, who was captured and remanded prior to the arrest of Gopaul, robbed the couple at their home at Yakusari North, Black Bush Polder of $1.7M.
Gopaul was remanded to prison until June 3, on that matter which was transferred to the Whim Magistrate’s court.
Gopaul was first taken into custody back in 2004 accused of murdering his father when he was just 14. The man allegedly shot his father dead following an altercation in the home.
He was among 18 prisoners who escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison in August 2007. He was recaptured not long after on East Bank Berbice.
Gopaul however managed to escape again when he was among four prisoners who broke out of the New Amsterdam prison in June 2011.
On Sunday the police were able to set up a dragnet at his home at Yakusari Black Bush polder. After he saw the cops coming he made an attempt to escape by fleeing into the backlands but ended up running into the police.
His brother was held in a similar operation few weeks ago. The police had searched the area and found Seeram hiding in some bushes in the area. Gopaul had managed to escape.
The police also held two other brothers and an uncle and found three cell phones during the raid.
