Bail was yesterday set to the tune of $50,000 for a pensioner/watchman who during his first court hearing admitted to pelting a knife at a drunken man who was reportedly taunting him.
Seeraj Sookraj of Second Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face a charge of unlawful wounding.
The charge which was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry stated that on May 1, in Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Stanley Persaud with intent to maim, harm or disfigure him. He pleaded guilty to the allegation.
Representing the Prosecution, Corporal Bharat Mangru said that the two men are known to each other.
Mangru explained that about 16:45 hours they were both imbibing Guinness and beers at a stand at the corner of Cornhill Street and Brickdam.
“Your worship, they had a heated argument over sexual activities and the defendant became annoyed. He pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim to his chest area.”
The Corporal stated that the matter was later reported to the Stabroek Police Outpost and the accused was arrested, cautioned and charged with the offence.
The Prosecutor said that there was no medical report filed and that the accused has had no prior charges or convictions. Mangru offered no objections to bail.
The accused (Sookraj), however, had a different tale to tell and claimed that efforts have been for them to settle the matter. He began “Your worship, I am a pensioner and I got a wuk as a watchman. I was going to work and I stop at the junction. I bought a beer and he (indicating to the victim) said he knows me.”
“He called me ‘thief man’ and ‘rape man’ and ‘murder man.’ He turn around and lash me with the bottle. Your worship, I pull out a knife from me side and pelt he.”
The accused explained that when the police arrived he had not fled but had remained at the corner shop. Sookraj said too that he and the victim decided that they would settle the matter.
Based on his explanation, the Chief Magistrate recorded a not guilty plea.
Meanwhile, the victim who was present at the court hearing confirmed that he had agreed to settle the matter in the sum of $150,000. Persaud said that he was begged to settle the matter.
The case will be called again on May 30.
