…fails to outrun residents
The police continue to put a dent in the criminal enterprise in Berbice. This time the person who was nabbed during a botched robbery was a national figure.
Former national junior athlete, Cortez Fraser, 20, of Tucber Park, New Amsterdam, was captured by residents last Friday after a botched robbery at a residence at No 50 Village, Corentyne.
Swift action by ranks at the Number 51 Village Police Station had led to the arrest of the man, who, along with an accomplice, tried to gain entry into a couple’s home by pretending to be police officers.
Fraser was on Tuesday remanded to prison by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh when he appeared before him at the Albion Magistrate’s Court; He was remanded to jail until May 7, next, when he is expected to appear at the No. 51 Magistrate’s court.
The prosecution asked that bail be refused on the grounds that a number of other matters of similar nature are being investigated and many charges are likely.
Around 21:30 hrs on April 25, Fraser and an accomplice entered the premises of Satkumar Deonat, claiming to be policemen at No. 50 Village, Corentyne, Berbice and demanded that they open the door to their home.
The man stated that he peeped out and saw that it wasn’t the police so he called his father.
He said one of the men had jumped onto the verandah while the other stayed on the steps. He stated that when he turned on the outside light the bandits asked him why he put on the light and told him to turn it off.
He said he did not obey and the man who was on the steps ran away. “He was wearing a mask, a brown shirt and black pants.”
His mother raised an alarm and neighbours came out and surrounded the home.
The second man, who was later identified as Fraser, jumped a fence and landed in a pond. He was subsequently caught and given a sound trashing by residents before being handed over to the police.
