Even as the police in Berbice are making inroads in the criminal enterprise in the county with a number of high profile arrests, bandit continue to strike.
The lawmen are investigating a robbery under arms which was committed on Monday last on a business at Cumberland, East Canje.
According to information, around 23:40 hrs, Rabindradatt Boundhan, 28, of Albion, Corentyne, had just parked a lorry in front of the Sunshine Supermarket and Poultry Supply at Lot 60 Public Road, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice. The man got out of the vehicle and uplifted a haversack containing $1,254,070 – the property of Indernauth Bishram, 29, of Sunshine Supermarket and Poultry Supply.
As the driver was crossing the road to enter the business premises, the owner came out to let him in when two masked bandits – one armed with a gun – came up from behind and held both of them at gunpoint.
Boundhan tossed the bag to Bishram in an attempt to evade the thieves, but the bandits held up both of them and took away the bag with the cash.
The bandits then escaped on foot via the public road. A number of suspects are in custody as investigations continue.
