A 26-year-old man who identified himself as an employee of the Ministry of Legal Affairs is on trial before the city court for purportedly swiping and selling a gadget from the Ministry.
Sherwin Benjamin, of Lot 100 South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, is currently facing Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of theft.
The allegation against him is that on April 5 at Carmichael Street, he stole a Digital Virtual Disc (DVD) player valued at $15,000 from the Ministry.
When he first appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on April 11 he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of $10,000.
The case was then transferred to Magistrate Chandan-Edmond for trial which commenced yesterday. Two police witnesses testified on behalf of the state.
The case against him is that he took the DVD player from the security hut and later sold it.
Yesterday, the man asked for a bail reduction since he was unable to raise the sum. His bail was reduced to $9,000 and he will appear in court on Friday for the continuation of his trial.
