– Magistrate asks defendant whether he is a kick boxer
A 32-year-old porter accused of thrashing his mother, and the mother of his children, was remanded to prison when he appeared before a city Magistrate yesterday.
Leon Hope of Thomas Street, Kitty, was unrepresented before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and pleaded not guilty to two counts of Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm.
The charges alleged that at Alexander Street on April 14, last, Hope assaulted his reputed wife and while on Thomas Street, Kitty on March 30, he assaulted his mother so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
The Prosecution spearheaded by Corporal Deniro Jones objected to bail stating that Hope is in the habit of abusing both his mother and reputed wife.
Jones explained, “This is where on two separate occasions he attacked the women. Your worship, he dealt them both several cuffs and kicks about their body causing actual bodily harm.”
“In a nut shell, his reputed wife (name given) was walking along Alexander Street when he verbally abused her. During the misunderstanding he dealt her several cuffs and kicks about her body.”
“Then on another occasion, he dealt his own mother several cuffs and kicks about her body.”
Corporal Jones affirmed that there is a need to send a strong message against domestic violence.
Magistrate McLennan at this point asked the defendant “You’re a kick-boxer? Do you have anything to say?”
Continuing, Jones stated that there are several prior incidents and they all share the same residence.
The mother who stood before the court as the case was being heard said, “He always threatening to kill me.” She was advised by the Magistrate to seek protection orders.
Hope was remanded to prison. He is scheduled to appear before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on May 19.
