Prisoner stabbed by mentally-ill inmate

A prisoner is nursing a stab wound to his upper chest at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after being wounded by another inmate at the Camp Street prison around 13:30 hrs yesterday.
Injured is 29-year-old Terry Joseph called “Spanish man” of Lot 6 Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara (EBD). He was wounded with an ice pick by Joshua Payne during an altercation in the capital offences section.

Up to press time, Joseph was in a stable condition in the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.
Joseph was remanded to prison after he along with four men, allegedly went out at sea and committed acts of piracy against several boat owners and their crew members, on September 08, 2012.
The men allegedly carted off $4M worth of boat equipment. Two were captured after police ranks, acting on information, went to a house in the Waini area, but Joseph and another suspect made good their escape.
However, the duo was later caught after a series of wanted bulletins were issued. Some of the stolen articles were recovered at a house some distance from the building they were caught in.
On October 06, 2012, days after Joseph was caught, he was admitted to the GPHC, to receive treatment for malaria. He was shot by ranks of a mobile police patrol minutes after he tried to escape from the hospital.
Meanwhile, Joseph’s attacker, Payne was remanded to prison since December 2012 for killing 42-year-old Kelvin Caines, a gold trader of Lodge Housing Scheme.
Caines was stabbed to death in the vicinity of Stabroek Market on December 19, 2012.
On February 06 last, a City Magistrate deemed that Joshua Payne was unfit to stand trial for the murder and ordered psychiatric care.
Investigations into yesterday’s stabbing are ongoing.
