The University of Guyana (UG) Inter-Faculty T20 cricket competition bowled off on Wednesday last at the UG ground and continued yesterday when the Faculty of Health Sciences (FOHS) battled the Faculty of Technology (FOT).
However, rain stopped the contest after 6.5 overs with FOHS on 41-1 off 6.5 overs in
reply to the 158-9 off their allotted 20 overs. Since five overs constitute a T20 game, FOHS, who needed to be 40-1 at that stage, were declared winners.
The second match between the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry clash was not played.
FOHS won the toss and elected to field on a track with some moisture due to early morning rain and FOT were led by a cameo 34 from Shaquille Williams who hit four fours and a six. He got support from Rayon McCall who made 33 and Jeremy Basdeo, 19 not out.
Darian Best took 3-24 from his four overs and Rajendra Singh 2-20 from four overs on the very rough and slow outfield.
When FOHS began their reply in bright sunshine and watched a nice gathering of students under a make shift tent, Skipper Neil Barry Jnr. (9) fell to McCall before Mustapha (16*) and Best (2*) were at the crease when a hard shower sent the players scurrying off the field.
With no covers available for the pitch although UG plays in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) competition apart from being a Government institution, the match was called off despite the ground being dry.
According to the rules, one female must be included in each team and they must bat between one and five in the order as well as bowl at least one over in the game. Sally Allison and Kim Chan were the two females involved. The competition continues today.
UG Coach Clive Grimond bemoaned the lack of covers and opined that only when UG’s elections
were approaching promises of covers and even nets for practice were made. Grimond added that the plans for covers seemed to have been shelved.
