A man who escaped from the wardens at the New Amsterdam Prison while he was allowed out of the facility on an errand was recaptured on Saturday last and sent back to jail.
Anand Drepersaud, 20, of Reliance Settlement, East Canje, Berbice was among a group of prisoners carrying out duties on October 23, last year, at Cumberland when he escaped and went into hiding.
According to information, Drepersaud, was serving a sentence for larceny from the person. He had stolen a gold chain.
Police acting on information around 05:00 hrs on Saturday, swooped down on a house at Canefield, East Canje, where the defendant was hiding, and arrested him.
He appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court yesterday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and pleaded guilty to the charge of escaping from lawful custody.
He was given a chance by the magistrate to explain his actions.
The convict told the court that on the day in question he was working when he saw his girlfriend on the road. He was so enticed that he got away just to be with her. They went to Georgetown together.
He told the court that he was sorry for what happened.
