…bids in for supervison and construction of High Street building
The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) is moving ahead with plans to use some $600M to renovate the building at High and Princes Street which will be the new home of the mines agency.
The GGMC is preparing to shift into its new headquarters at the former Radio Demerara Building on High Street, especially since the controversy that had surrounded the price tag for repairs to the defective building appears to have subsided.
Tenders for bids to repair the building have been received. Officials say that work is expected to commence on correcting some massive defects to the building in the coming months.
With public advertisement from the GGMC for contractors to start work on the High Street building, the move is almost certain.
Management of the GGMC had initially expressed anger with Cabinet ordering the agency to spend more than $100M to buy the defective High Street building which was originally slated for the Labour and Human Services Ministry. US$3M was added to the tab to make the building habitable for GGMC’s 300-plus staff.
Sources had stated that officials were even more upset because they had already spent millions of dollars on a new building in its Brickdam compound, which is now the head office of the Natural Resources Ministry headed by Minister Robert Persaud.
Additional moves to ease the congestion issue at the GGMC had also been shot down by the Natural Resource Ministry. However, significant engineering defects will have to be repaired at the High Street location.
Capacity capabilities in accommodating staff, machinery and visitors, remain a major concern for the agency.
