Yesterday, Commonwealth Day, was observed across the world and many schools across Guyana made their own contributions to this occasion.
According to the Royal Commonwealth Secretariat, “The aim of Commonwealth Day Observance is to celebrate the unity, diversity and linkages of the modern Commonwealth and foster greater understanding of the Commonwealth’s achievements and role, particularly among young people.”
This aim was highlighted by the pupils of South Road Nursery and Liana Nursery Schools, which featured the various Commonwealth countries.
With the theme for Commonwealth Day 2014 “Team Commonwealth” in mind, students of South Road Nursery were grouped into small teams showcasing 12 of the 54 Commonwealth nations.
Observing Commonwealth Day has become an annual event for South Road Nursery. The occasion is used as a learning initiative for pupils. They were tasked with preparing pictorial charts containing information of the nations, dressing in national attires, displaying the various
national delicacies and gyrating to music.
Some of the Commonwealth countries featured this year were Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Grenada, South Africa, Malaysia, United Kingdom, Ghana, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria.
Meanwhile, 54 students of Liana Nursery School displayed flags of the Commonwealth countries. This was the first year that the school challenged its pupils to participate in Commonwealth Day observance.
Head teachers of both schools believe that the activities would help to expand students’ knowledge on countries and cultures outside of Guyana. The lessons taught through fun would be imprinted in the children’s minds as they enter primary school.
