Repeat offender jailed for stealing pig
A labourer of Princes Street, Lodge was yesterday sentenced to one year imprisonment by a city Magistrate after he confessed to stealing his neighbour’s pig.
Calvin Francis at first insisted that earlier last month he was heading home when he noticed the pig lying on the street, picked it up, and took it to the market to sell.

On the other hand, State Prosecutor, Cadet Officer Colin Primus insisted that on February 10, Francis stole his neighbour Jean Bacchus’s pig valued at $65,000 from her yard.
Primus explained that about 13:30 hours that day, Bacchus had the pig in her pen but around 16:20 hours, she noticed the animal was missing. She was subsequently informed by persons that the accused was seen with the pig in the yard.
Bacchus reported the matter to the police leading to the man’s arrest. Francis was subsequently charged and brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on February 5. Based on the explanations he had given the Chief Magistrate, a plea of not guilty was entered. He was on that occasion remanded to prison and the matter was subsequently transferred to Magistrate Chandan-Edmond for trial.
During the course of the trial, the court heard that the accused was previously convicted on a simple larceny charge where he served 18 months in prison for stealing a car light.
Yesterday, when he appeared before Magistrate Chandan-Edmond he changed his plea to guilty and was subsequently jailed.
