Lack of ‘Mental Processing root cause’ of suicidal behaviour – research finds
The last five years have revealed that a large number of people have attempted suicide. The American University of Research (AUOR) after completing extensive survey in this regard– specifically on the Essequibo Coast–has determined that “‘mental processing’ is the root cause” of the abnormal behaviour.

Project Officer Jennel Williams explained that it was realized that the lack of effective ‘metal processing’ contributed immensely to suicide attempts, since all abnormal behaviours are psychologically induced. The suicide report explained that the continuing issue is becoming a trend which is fueled by several factors.
Mental processing is described as all things a person can do with their mind. Technological advancement has created an imbalance between parents and children. Relationships and domestic issues also contribute to the suicide rate. The survey said that the majority of suicide victims were between 12 and 20 years old, with men being the most common victims.
The University has stated, also, that extensive information was gathered on suicidal behaviour and that it is in the process of designing a strategic plan to reduce this abnormal behaviour. This includes the use of technology for self-awareness and self development training.
It was recommended from the Essequibo residents who took part in the community survey that the issue needs to be sensationalized by television and youth programmes. The University recommended that counsel centres, and coaches be provided to support other strategies that seek to address the issue on a personal level.
The report concluded that fundamental sources of suicide include genetic/biological factors, cultural factors, psychological and economical factors.
The University noted that further findings from the survey will be released at a later date. A documentary will be complied on the mission.
The survey team met with students, parents, teachers, public persons and even persons who have already attempted suicide. The team travelled throughout Essequibo and studied over 2000 people who are residents on the Coast.
Several psychology students accompanied Mrs. Leila Ramson, Chairman – Teaching Service Commission, Dr. Eton Simon President of AUOR and Psychologist among other prominent executive members who conducted the survey.
The World Health Organization has labeled Guyana as the country with the highest suicide rate among Caribbean countries. The university says it is an obligation that all play a significant role in reducing the number of suicides.
In light of this, the American University of Peace Studies in collaboration with the American University of Research embarked on the grass root initiative to deal with the root causes of the suicide patterns.
The objective of the initiative is to significantly reduce the number of deaths by suicide in Guyana by the end of this year. In order to do this, the university conducted research studies, outreach programmes, offered counseling services, workshops and distributed suicidal prevention literature in a number of areas throughout Guyana; especially along the Essequibo Coast.
