Senior Education officers within the Region Two District carried out a truancy campaign on Thursday. Areas targeted were Maria’s Lodge, Suddie and Riverstown, all on the southern half of the Essequibo Coast.
On Thursday, Education Officers learnt that some children were not attending school.
Parents offered various reasons, one of them being that some children were unable to attend School due to financial issues. But there were issues of child labor and in other instances, illness.
During the outreach, parents were issued warning letters by the Schools’ Welfare unit. They were also warned about the consequences if they continue to deny their children the right to education.
Those parents who expressed financial constraints were advised by Education Officers to visit the Schools’ Welfare Unit for recommendations to be issued with Public Assistance by the Social Security Department.
One sawmiller was issued a warning letter by the Regional Labour Officer for employing two schoolage boys.
Two cases were referred to the Child Care and Protection Agency for intervention.
